Tempeh Chips Calories and Nutrition, Flavour by Flavour
Search “tempeh calories” and you’ll see about 190 kcal per 100 g. Pick up a pack of tempeh chips and the label says over 500. Same soybeans, so what happened? This guide explains the difference, then gives you the full nutrition numbers for all eight Truly Gourmet tempeh chips, per 100 g and per pack, straight from our nutrition information panels.
How many calories are in tempeh chips?
Our tempeh chips contain 493 to 522 kcal per 100 g, depending on the flavour. That works out to about 394 to 418 kcal per 80 g pack.
That’s in the same range as most crisps, because tempeh chips are a crisp: sliced thin and fried until crunchy. Where they differ from potato or corn chips is what comes with those calories: 12.4 to 14.5 g of protein and 7.2 to 9.4 g of dietary fibre per 100 g.
Why tempeh chips have more calories than raw tempeh
Fresh tempeh, the cake you’d slice and cook at home, is about 190 kcal per 100 g according to USDA FoodData Central. Tempeh chips land at roughly 500. Three things explain the jump:
- Water comes out. Fresh tempeh is around 60% water. Frying drives most of it out, so 100 g of chips holds far more actual food than 100 g of fresh tempeh. The calories get concentrated.
- Some oil goes in. Every fried chip absorbs some oil while it crisps.
- The recipe is different. Our tempeh for chips is fermented together with flour, which gives each chip its white areas and its crunch. That adds carbohydrate.
The same effect explains why protein per 100 g is lower in chips (12–15 g) than in fresh tempeh (around 19–20 g): the flour and oil take up part of every 100 g.

Per 80 g pack
Each pack is 80 g, so multiply the per-100 g figure by 0.8. Here are the two numbers people ask about most:
| Flavour | Energy per pack | Protein per pack |
|---|---|---|
| Sea Salt | 414 kcal | 10.7 g |
| Sea Salt Light | 418 kcal | 11.0 g |
| Garlic | 417 kcal | 10.2 g |
| Black Pepper | 394 kcal | 10.5 g |
| Cumin | 411 kcal | 11.1 g |
| Chives | 418 kcal | 10.8 g |
| Onion | 403 kcal | 11.6 g |
| Indonesian Classic | 410 kcal | 9.9 g |
Most people don’t finish a pack in one go. A smaller handful scales the same way: for example, 25 g of Sea Salt is about 129 kcal and 3.4 g of protein.
What the numbers tell you

How to read a nutrition label in 4 steps
- Compare per 100 g. Serving sizes differ between brands; per 100 g is the fair comparison.
- Then check per pack or per serving to see what you’ll actually eat.
- Look at protein and fibre together with fat and sodium. One number on its own doesn’t tell the whole story.
- Read the ingredient list. The first ingredient is the main one.
